THE FOUR PARTS

Medicare at a glance

Each part helps cover a different kind of care. Your choices determine how these parts work together.

A

Hospital Insurance

Helps cover inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and certain home health services.

B

Medical Insurance

Helps cover doctors' services, outpatient care, durable medical equipment, and many preventive services.

C

Medicare Advantage

A Medicare-approved private plan alternative to Original Medicare. It includes Parts A and B and usually Part D.

D

Drug Coverage

Helps cover the cost of prescription drugs. Coverage is offered through private plans that follow Medicare rules.

COMPARE YOUR PATH

Two main ways to receive Medicare coverage

Both paths provide Medicare Part A and Part B coverage, but the way you receive care and pay costs can differ.

Original Medicare

  • Includes Part A and Part B
  • Use any provider nationwide who accepts Medicare
  • You may add a separate Part D plan
  • You may be able to buy Medigap coverage

Medicare Advantage

  • Offered by Medicare-approved private companies
  • Includes Part A and Part B, usually Part D
  • Provider networks or prior approval may apply
  • Costs, rules, and extra benefits vary by plan

ENROLLMENT

Timing matters

For many people, the first Medicare enrollment window begins three months before the month they turn 65 and ends three months after that month. Some people are enrolled automatically, while current job-based coverage, disability, or other circumstances can change the timing.

Missing an enrollment period may lead to a coverage gap or a late-enrollment penalty. Always confirm the dates that apply to your situation.
